Jankovic determined to break Henin

Posted in ATP, Articles, Tennis News  by John

Jelena JankovicSerbia’s Jelena Jankovic is confident she can break her 0-9 losing streak against Justine Henin and seriously challenge the Belgian world number one this year.

The 23-year-old Jankovic, ranked fourth in the world, had a breakthrough 2007 in which she won four tour titles, reached four other finals and the French Open semi-final.

She also reached the Australian Open semi-finals in January, but is yet to beat Henin, who has won all nine of their meetings.

“Last year, almost the whole year, I was number two in the race and number three in the rankings,” Jankovic told Reuters.

“So I was very close, and the player who was in front of me was Justine Henin.

“She was the better one, I beat everybody else last year except her,” she said in an interview at the Bangalore Open, where she is top seed.

“(But) this year is a new year, and everything starts from the beginning, from zero.”

The powerful Serbian beat American multiple grand slam winner Serena Williams in the Australian Open quarter-finals before falling to Russia’s Maria Sharapova.

Almagro sinks Nalbandian in Acapulco final

Posted in ATP, Articles, Tennis News  by John

Nicolas Almagro continued his torrid start to the season and David Nalbandian was helpless to slow him down.

Almagro won his second title of the year, derailing the top-seeded Nalbandian, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) in the final of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel tennis tournament Saturday night.Nicolas Almagro

The sixth-seeded Spaniard improved to 15-3 on the season and added the title of this $794,000 dual-gender claycourt event to the Costa do Sauipe championship he won last month.

“I’m so happy that whatever I say now is going to be positive,” Almagro said. “I worked really hard to get where I am today. … It’s incredible to have won two tournaments in two weeks.

“In Buenos Aires, I had a small injury but I managed to get healthy in time for Acapulco. I really like this tournament. The crowd was incredible all week long and I also have to thank them. They played a big role in my victories here this week.”

Almagro halted Nalbandian’s nine-match winning streak and handed the Argentine just his second loss in 12 matches this year.

Ranked eight in the world, Nalbandian moved back into the top 10 after claiming his eighth career ATP singles title in Buenos Aires last weekend.

Roddick exits Memphis

Posted in ATP, Articles, Tennis News  by John

Top-seeded Andy Roddick was outgunned 7-6 6-3 by Swede Robin Soederling after a battle of big-serving in the Memphis Championship quarter-finals on Friday.

Soederling, the eighth seed, trumped the Roddick’s 15 aces by unleashing 16 of his own to seal victory in one hour and 25 minutes in an explosive match on the Stadium Court.

“We both served well and it was fun to play against him,” Soederling told reporters after his first meeting with Roddick. “This is probably my favorite court on tour. I am serving great and I have no complaints at all.”

Roddick predicted Soederling would now win the tournament.

“I thought if I would have gotten through that match, I’ve had a good chance of going the whole way,” said Roddick, who never held a break opportunity.

“I certainly think he’s going to go all the way.”

Soederling will next face fourth-seed Radek Stepanek after the Czech beat Australian Chris Guccione 7-6 6-1.

Steve Darcis of Belgium fired down nine aces to crush Germany’s Benjamin Becker 6-1 6-0 in the first quarter-final of the day.

The 23-year-old from Liege will face ATP Tour veteran Jonas Bjorkman in the last four, the Swede having battled past American Donald Young 1-6 6-2 7-6 in a two-hour contest.
